Reddit is now testing a new way to verify users. It adds a grey checkmark next to usernames of real people and brands.
This test is small. It starts with a few picked accounts. These include big names like journalists from NBC News and the Boston Globe. Businesses that had an old “official” badge now get the grey mark too.
The goal is simple. It helps users know who is real. This cuts down on fake accounts and lies. Mods in communities won’t have to check IDs by hand as much.
Reddit says this is free. No one pays for it. It’s not about being special. It’s opt-in, so users choose to join. You keep your fake name if you want. Reddit still loves secret IDs.
This builds on a 2023 test for brands. Back then, it was just an “official” label. Now it’s a checkmark for more people.
No word on when it goes big. Users can’t apply yet. Reddit will share updates if it grows.
This comes as bots and AI flood the web. Reddit wants to stay a spot for real talks. It’s a smart move to build trust.
