OpenAI unveiled the latest gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b AI models. What is special about these models is that they can be used locally on personal devices such as laptops or even smartphones requiring neither the internet, nor huge data centers.
Laszlo said that now users can download them for free via such platforms as Hugging Face and Databricks.
These models are more environmentally friendly due to their low carbon footprint since they do not demand heavy cloud computing and they also provide users with improved privacy and control.
But they only provide text-based responses: there is no image support or voice input.
The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, called this a “big deal” and credited it to years of “research and capital investments.” These models help people control their own AI, and this, he added, would enable the innovation process across the board.
It was something they said around the need to, “do good work with AI,” or as he put it, “We want more people doing the important work with AI.”
And these models are “not going to be instead of ChatGPT“, OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman said, but rather complementary: they’re “good primarily for offline and personal use cases”.
To give an illustration, you can run the smaller model and it only requires 16 GB of memory and thus you can run it on common devices (gpt-oss-20b).
Both models are also of open-weight, allowing developers to see internally how the AI actually works. They are available under the Apache 2.0 license, which is free for commercial use and modification.
According to OpenAI, these models utilize different step-by-step reasoning and are capable of web browsing, code-execution and working within other software (however, these do not support images or voice commands).
OpenAI evaluated the models ahead of their release for safety risks such as the models being used to conduct cyberattacks or harmful use. The company found no high-risk behavior, it said.
Open AI feels that by opening up the tools and making it free will help other developers, researchers, and companies to build meaningful inventions and AI projects with ease.
